How to Reduce Energy Costs For Your Restaurant | Our Property Bear
Updated: Jun 19

Are you looking for ways to save money in your restaurant operations?
The answer may be closer than you think. Energy efficiency can quickly add up and create cost savings for any restaurant.
We are here to tell you about our success story: a case study in how energy efficiency drastically reduced operating expenses at one of our restaurants.
By implementing simple, straightforward strategies, our restaurant was able to realise big results! Read on as we discuss the details of this exciting case study and what it could mean for your business.
Looking to create unforgettable dining experiences, a boutique group of restaurants faced a significant challenge: rising energy costs that were even surpassing rent at some locations. That's where we stepped in, installing Energy Saving Monitors to help cut down on energy usage and costs. Restaurants often struggle to find the best business energy rates, so any savings are especially valuable.
We placed 28-40 monitors in each restaurant, allowing us to track energy usage across all areas of the premises.

One of the biggest energy drains in restaurants is extract and ventilation, which can account for up to 45% of daily electricity usage.
In one location, extract controls were not automated and were unnecessarily working harder than needed.
By installing timers and reducing extract, we were able to reduce electricity usage by 50% in the same month year-over-year.
This restaurant and others have seen nearly 50% reductions in monthly year-over-year consumption, leading to a savings of around £107,000 per year with a "fit and forget" solution.

We also identified other ways to reduce energy costs for these restaurants.
A faulty dishwasher was found to be a significant energy consumer, but after maintenance and staff engagement, it's now using 75% less electricity per day, saving around £3,300/year.
The drinks cellar needed some attention too, with the door not closing properly and insulation damaged. By addressing these issues, the drinks cellar now uses 50% less electricity, saving around £4,100/year.
Even back-of-house LED lights were contributing to high energy usage, but by replacing them, we're saving over £4,000/year.

Our Property Bear software and support were essential to achieving these impressive savings.
Our data makes energy usage visible to everyone, allowing the entire team to help identify and execute savings opportunities.
Already in the first quarter of 2023, we've seen significant savings at each restaurant location, with Stratford at 19%, Kingston at 27%, and St Giles at 43%.
With our help, these restaurants are creating unforgettable experiences while also protecting the planet and saving money.

After reading through this case study, we hope that you can see the impact energy efficiency can have on any restaurant's operations.
We also hope it serves as an inspiration and motivation to find ways to make your own restaurant more efficient — and by doing so, save yourself money over time.
